What to Do Between Christmas and New Year's
Schools are on holiday break, the kids are suffering from cabin fever and the budget is blown on holiday gifts. What's a parent to do? Visit Indianapolis! Here are several ideas to keep everyone in your family entertained between Christmas and New Year's, without spending a fortune!
New Year's Eve Celebrations
  • Ring in the New Year at 8 p.m. with a balloon drop at the Indiana State Museum! The popular band The Tides returns with their special brand of musical magic, and the Santa Claus Express will carry passengers for the last rides of the year until closing at 9 p.m. Other activities include face painting, clowns, hands-on crafts and children's games.
  • Five, four, three, two, one…Happy Noon Year! Join The Children's Museum as they Countdown to Noon on New Year's Eve Day. This hour-long event will let children and families participate in the excitement of a countdown to the New Year in anticipation of the evening's countdown. Enjoy activities including face painting, noisemakers, music and dancing.
  • Welcome 2010 with a whirlwind of waltzes from the palaces of Vienna accompanied by members of Dance Kaleidoscope, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Associate Conductor Sean Newhouse. The merriment continues after the concert with a party in the Hilbert Circle Theatre. Stay for a dance and a sip of champagne after the concert and welcome the New Year in grand fashion.
Active
  • Head for the hills – the new sledding hill at Major Taylor Velodrome’s Snowball Park, that is. Rent sledding tubes and take a free-flying ride down the faux-snow covered, converted bicycle track.
  • Bundle up and take a walk around Monument Circle admiring the Circle of Lights® presented by the contractors of Quality Connection and electrical workers of IBEW 481. You’ll find oversized toy soldiers and sailors, and thousands of twinkle lights in the trees.
  • Cheer on the Indiana Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse when they take on the Atlanta Hawks on Dec. 26, the Memphis Grizzlies on Dec. 30 or the Minnesota Timberwolves on Jan. 2. Tickets are available now for as low as $10.
Educational Entertainment
  • Can you imagine what it would be like to see a light bulb light up for the first time? Stop in Conner Prairie's History-Science Theater to hear the story of a burgeoning 19th-century scientist as he experiments with early electricity. Inspired by the lighting of Wabash, Ind., in 1880 (the first electrically lit city in the world), our scientist will explain the basics of electricity. See paper float, a light bulb miraculously turn on and a shocking new machine that will make your hair stand on end! Lend a hand to our scientist as he tests theories and works on experiments.
  • The world's most popular doll is also everyone's favorite fashionista, inspiring young designers and professionals alike to create the fashions of their dreams. All ages will enjoy
Barbie: The Fashion Experience, a hands-on exhibit at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis in which you can take your designs from the workroom to the runway, go backstage with Barbie™ and see some of her most famous looks from the past 50 years, as well as view life-size fashion designs by some of the world's most renowned designers! The unique inter-generational appeal of Barbie® doll will have entire families sharing Barbie® memories and learning all about the art of collecting.
  • Go on a musical journey to a magical place where dreams come true during the Indianapolis Civic Theatre's holiday production of The Wizard of Oz. Featuring a large children's chorus and an array of special effects, including a full-blown tornado, this is the musical favorite for all ages.
