The American Legion Mall occupies two city blocks from St. Clair Street to North Street, between Meridian and Pennsylvania Streets. On the east side of the mall is the American Legion's national headquarters (built in 1950), and on the west side is the headquarters of the American Legion's Department of Indiana (built in 1925).
On the mall's south end, in a square marked by four black pillars topped by gold eagles, is a rectangular black granite Cenotaph, which memorializes Corporal James Bethal Gresham of Evansville, Indiana. A member of the 16th Infantry of the American Expeditionary Forces, Gresham was the first enlisted American soldier to die in World War I.
Further north, the mall includes memorials for World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars, as well as Veteran's Memorial Plaza (featuring a 100-foot-tall black granite obelisk) and the World War Memorial.
