Indianapolis embraces a very important holiday in the midst of its racing festivities--Memorial Day. A wreath-laying ceremony, dedicated to the memory of all Hoosiers in all wars and conflicts who sacrificed their lives in defense of the nation, will take place while the names of those Indiana servicemen who have fallen within the past year are read aloud.
We will once again host a world-class leader to fill the tole of our featured speaker. Past speakers have included Tom Brokaw, General Peter Chiarelli (Vice Chief of Staff, US Army) and John. W. Miller (US Navy). Other notable guest speakers will include 500 Festival Chairmain of the Board, Scott Thiems, the mayor of the City of Indianapolis and the Honorable Gov. Mitch Daniels.
Also included is the presentation of colors from the Joint Services Color Guard, a performance by the Indiana National Guard's 38th Infantry Division Band and Capital City Chorus, and a special military funeral horse-drawn caisson presented by the Military Department of Indiana Ceremonial Unit will pass, symbolizing Army soldiers who accompany the remains of the deceased to the gravesite. The rider-less horse represents the fact that the deceased had fallen as a warrior and will not ride again. A ceremonial flyover by the Indiana Air National Guard will conclude the service.
