Indiana is a veritable graveyard of mastodonts and mammoths. Discovery of their remains and the ensuing dig has always generated excitement and fascination in local communities and beyond. Field excavations and laboratory work on area sites are posing fascinating questions about the life and times of these ancient beasts. Indiana's Elephant Graveyards will immerse visitors in an enlightening and educational adventure that explores the life and death of these giant animals and poses the question of why they became extinct.

Entombed in Indiana soil are the abundant remains of mastodonts and mammoths. Found in nearly every county, these ancient bones and teeth are all that remain of the huge lumbering beasts that once walked the soil occupied by the visitor's neighborhood today. Indiana has provided a large part of the skeletons seen by the public: nine mastodont and one mammoth skeleton from northern Indiana have been secured by eight major museums for mounted skeletons. Only four skeletons have remained in Indiana as public mounts. The Indiana State Museum has excavated more of these behemoths than any other Indiana institution, excavating or salvaging 11 burial sites in 10 different counties since 1933.
