Orangutans

International Orangutan Exhibit at the Indianapolis Zoo
Coming in 2014 to the Indianapolis Zoo

  • Designed to meet the physical, social and intellectual needs of these highly intelligent, charismatic and endangered creatures
  • The new landmark, The Beacon of Hope, will become part of Indy’s skyline - a 150 foot tower recreating the ecosystem of Sumatra and Borneo, the rainforest environment of the orangutan
  • Two aerial features are extraordinary for both visitors and the orangs. The orangs may take the Hutan Trail – an aerial system of cables and walkways that give them freedom to move about the zoo. Meanwhile, visitors can ride the Skyline, an aerial cable, to follow their adventures
  • Scientists testing orangutan intelligence and social activities will interact with visitors in the Exploration Hub
  • Expected opening in 2014 – check back as more information is released
