The Indianapolis Public Library is an essential community information service, providing materials and programs in support of the lifelong learning, recreational and economic interests of all citizens of Marion County. The Central Library is the hub of the Library system and a significant asset to the city. The original building was designed in 1917 by Paul Cret. Built in the Greek Doric style, it was considered one of the most outstanding architectural library structures in the United States. Fittingly, its exterior is of Indiana limestone build on a base of Vermont marble, with carved stone cornices adding to its beauty.

In addition to its own handsome exterior, the library offers two modern artworks by artist Peter Shelton. The two-part bronze sculpture thinmanlittlebird was installed in 2009, offering a marked contrast to the classic building that hosts it.

Following a recent expansion, a glass and steel Atrium serves as the connector between the original building and the new six-story glass and steel addition which embraces the historic building and reflects its beauty in its many windows.
