Kraut n' Brats
While dining at The Rathskeller, I learned that 'Rathskeller' is German for a tavern below street level that serves beer and a German cuisine. Unfortunately, I also learned that at this Rathskeller their heavy portions are overpriced and overcooked. I enjoyed trying various German beers, which I couldn’t pronounce from their extremely long list of beer options. The spinach artichoke appetizer and basket of breads, including warm pretzels and mustard, were delicious; however, my disappointment came with my overcooked entrée. Perhaps this is what I get for not ordering anything too German-like, but kraut n’ brats aren’t my forte. This restaurant should be reserved for those who have distinct taste buds for German food. Despite the food, the service was impeccable, the restaurant clean, and the atmosphere enjoyable. The old building has a lot of interesting history, as well as lots of beautiful open space for wedding parties and banquets. The highlight of the Rathskeller comes with their Biergarten outside and behind the restaurant. Live music and great weather bring a wealth of people out to enjoy the German beer. While I may not encourage Rathskeller’s cuisine, I definitely recommend a Friday or Saturday night out at the Biergarten.

We Visit Every Time
Every time we come down to Indy from Fort Wayne we make it a must to stop in for beers and lunch. We find ourselves staying for the nightly entertainment outside on the patio. The beer selections and the wonderful sausage dishes along with the decor make you feel like you walked through a magic door and landed in Germany.

Wonderful
Staff is great. They will remember you if you have only been in one time prior. Menu is so varied I had a hard time deciding. The location is a historic gem. A place to remember!

Very wide menu
Wow. The menu was surprising with everything from traditional German food to pasta and pork chops. With such a range of choices I wished there was more of a range in price points. Most of the meals were $20 or more. While the food was good the atmosphere and the cost was a bit of a mismatch in my opinion.

One of the worst
As someone who actually lived in Germany and dined in many of their restaurants I can honestly say there is no comparison. It is not family friendly at all and unless you are posturing at a business meeting you will find this place pretty disappointing. I saw a total of 3 things that were actually German on the menu and everything else was American or Italian. I was with my dad when we went and he asked if we could eat outside. We were informed that you had to be 21 just to sit outside and as I am only 17 it was not okay. It was almost as soon as we sat down that we decided to leave. The staff was rude, and while the inside of the restaurant was nice we couldn't get over the age limit for eating outside. The food wasn't German, the atmosphere wasn't German, the service wasn't German, and the restaurant itself just wasn't German. Thoroughly disappointing experience. However, if you like real German food with a great atmosphere and nice service you should try the German-American Klub. It's just outside of the city and when i ate there I felt welcome and like I was part of the family. Also, it was much more affordable. :)

TERRIBLE!
My food was cold and I would have sent it back but our waiter never showed back up until he delivered the bill....he never asked how our food was either....and he never brought any bread like he said he would. It was a terrible experience and my dinner was awful. My husband's food was fine, and hot, but mine was absolutely disgusting. I brought it home and threw it away. $75 and it's in the trash. Never again will we go there.
