Just a short drive or bus ride from downtown Indianapolis on 152 acres of gardens and grounds, the Indianapolis Museum of Art is one of the top ten general art museums in the United States, with a collection of more than 50,000 works that spans a wide range of cultures and eras. Highlights of the collection include:
- The best collection in North America of Pont-Aven paintings by Paul Gauguin and his followers and the finest collection of Pont-Aven School prints in the world
- The most comprehensive group of Neo-Impressionist paintings in the country, featuring the work of Georges Seurat and his followers
- One of the most significant collections of works by J.M.W. Turner outside of Great Britain
- Outstanding collections of Japanese Edo-period paintings and Chinese ceramics
- One of the most ambitious and vigorous programs for contemporary art and design at an encyclopaedic museum.
The IMA also has significant holdings of African art, West Asian rugs, fashion arts, and a rapidly growing contemporary collection from emerging and internationally renowned artists.
In addition to housing its art collection, the Museum also is a premier showcase for national and international exhibitions. It regularly hosts a variety of lectures, classes and workshops. In 2005, the Indianapolis Museum of Art reopened following a $74 million expansion that doubled its size, increased exhibition and gallery space and expanded visitor amenities.

One of Indy's Greatest Gems
The Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) is truly one of our city's best and brightest gems. Under the direction of CEO Maxwell Anderson, the IMA did away with admission fees in the past year, which has made this great venue more accessible and enjoyable for all Indy residents and visitors. Whether you are 8 or 88, you'll enjoy strolling through the various galleries, walking around the beautiful and spacious grounds and learning about the past in one of the special exhibits. Our family took advantage of the opportunity to see the Roman Exhibit, straight from the Louvre, on a recent visit. At $30 for two adults and a child, this special exhibit is a bargain you can't beat! Our daughter loved seeing the Roman sculptures up close, analyzing the hairstyles of the day, learning about the history and culture of the people who lived during this time, and oohing and aahing over the fine jewelry that has been remarkably preserved over the years.
Whether you are a resident or visitor, the IMA is a perfect place to spend a day, and presents an outstanding picnic spot during nice weather. We enjoyed our visit so much that we opted to purchase a family membership so that we can return throughout the year, and have the opportunity to visit the special exhibits at no additional cost. Pack up your children and their sketch pads, soak up some culture and enjoy your visit to the Indianapolis Museum of Art!
