Just a short drive or bus ride from downtown Indianapolis on 152 acres of gardens and grounds, the Indianapolis Museum of Art is the fifth largest general art museum in the United States, with a collection of more than 50,000 works that spans a wide range of cultures and eras. Highlights of the collection include:
  • The Samuel Josefowitz Collection of Gauguin and the School of Pont-Aven
  • The Neo-Impressionist Collection, featuring the work of Georges Seurat and his followers
  • One of the most significant collection of works by J.M.W. Turner outside of Great Britain
  • One of the most outstanding collections of Japanese Edo-period paintings in the nation.
The IMA also has significant holdings of African art, Chinese ceramics, West Asian rugs, fashion arts, and a rapidly growing contemporary collection from emerging and internationally renowned artists.
In addition to housing its art collection, the Museum also is a premier showcase for national and international exhibitions. It regularly hosts a variety of lectures, classes and workshops. In 2005, the Indianapolis Museum of Art reopened following a $74 million expansion that doubled its size, increased exhibition and gallery space and expanded visitor amenities.
Oldfields - Lilly House & Gardens
A National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Oldfields - Lilly House & Gardens is an elegant 26-acre estate on the grounds of the IMA. Lilly House is a historic house museum and has been restored to its 1930s splendor. Percival Gallagher, of the acclaimed landscape architecture firm Olmsted Brothers, designed Oldfields' magnificent gardens and grounds in the 1920s.
100 Acres: The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park
Slated to open in June 2010, this new attraction will be one of the largest museum contemporary sculpture parks in the United States, as it is located on 100 acres of untamed woodlands, wetlands, lakes and meadows adjacent to the IMA. Eight inaugural artists have been selected to create site-specific works for the park, which will open with installations by Atelier Van Lieshout, Kendall Buster, Alfredo Jaar, Los Carpinteros, Tea Makipaa, Type A, Jeppe Hein and Andrea Zittel.
Nourish Cafe
The IMA's new restaurant serves a variety of fresh, healthy and seasonal options. Menu selections take advantage of local produce whenever possible.
The museum and restaurant are open Tues.-Sun., 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Thurs.-Fri., 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Closed Mon., Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. General admission is free. Gardens and grounds open daily from dawn until dusk.

One of Indy's Greatest Gems
The Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) is truly one of our city's best and brightest gems. Under the direction of CEO Maxwell Anderson, the IMA did away with admission fees in the past year, which has made this great venue more accessible and enjoyable for all Indy residents and visitors. Whether you are 8 or 88, you'll enjoy strolling through the various galleries, walking around the beautiful and spacious grounds and learning about the past in one of the special exhibits. Our family took advantage of the opportunity to see the Roman Exhibit, straight from the Louvre, on a recent visit. At $30 for two adults and a child, this special exhibit is a bargain you can't beat! Our daughter loved seeing the Roman sculptures up close, analyzing the hairstyles of the day, learning about the history and culture of the people who lived during this time, and oohing and aahing over the fine jewelry that has been remarkably preserved over the years. Whether you are a resident or visitor, the IMA is a perfect place to spend a day, and presents an outstanding picnic spot during nice weather. We enjoyed our visit so much that we opted to purchase a family membership so that we can return throughout the year, and have the opportunity to visit the special exhibits at no additional cost. Pack up your children and their sketch pads, soak up some culture and enjoy your visit to the Indianapolis Museum of Art!
