There will be a temporary closure of the observation level of the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument to allow for needed upgrades and repairs. The closure of the observation level will begin Monday, April 6, 2009. The observation level is expected to re-open at the end of September.
The monument is located on Monument Circle in the center of downtown and has come to symbolize the city of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana.
Originally designed to honor the memory of Indiana's Civil War veterans, it now commemorates the valor of all Indiana military men and women in all wars prior to World War I. The monument stands approximately 300 feet above the surrounding streets. Allow time to look at the intricate design and statues. The War Memorial Commission offers a brochure describing all aspects of the design and symbolism.
The Col. Eli Lilly Civil War Museum is housed in the lower level. Observation level is 330 steps up or take the elevator to step 290.
