Indianapolis continues to be a popular site for international, national and regional conventions, trade shows, corporate meetings and major special events. The Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association (ICVA) reports that convention business has increased from 79,702 room-nights in 1984, the year the first expansion of the Indiana Convention Center & (then) RCA Dome was completed, to 496,582 in 2007. During the same period of time, the city also experienced a major increase of delegates, from 147,150 to 724,382. In order to accommodate the increase in traffic, the Indiana Convention & RCA Dome completed several extensive expansion projects leading to the construction and opening of the new Lucas Oil Stadium.
Growth Factors
The expansion of the Indiana Convention Center & RCA Dome is only one factor in this tremendous growth spurt. Another factor is the city’s increased hotel inventory. Between 1984 and 2005, 183 new hotels with 16,722 rooms opened in Indianapolis metropolitan area. Citywide, Indianapolis has more than 28,800 rooms in 284 hotels. Now, nearly 6,000 hotel rooms are located downtown, most of which are within easy walking distance (3 ½ blocks) of the convention center, with more than 3,000 connected via skywalks.
Other characteristics that make Indianapolis attractive to meeting planners include:
Seven years after the 1984 expansion and addition of the dome, the Indiana Convention Center & RCA Dome was operating at capacity. To generate future bookings and maintain a steady rate of convention business, a $43 million expansion and renovation of the complex was completed in September 1993. The expansion included the addition of the Sagamore Ballroom, a 33,000-square foot multi-purpose room; 22,000 square feet of flexible meeting space; skywalks connecting the complex with two hotels and parking garages; a new lobby and registration area; and more pre-function space.
Approximately 55,000 square feet of existing meeting rooms and other areas were renovated. RCA Dome improvements included the addition of two new video screens and enhanced accessibility for persons with disabilities. The two-story expansion gave Indianapolis the capability to host more overlapping, back-to-back and simultaneous events.
Another renovation of the RCA Dome was completed in August 1999. The $20 million project included the creation of a new street-level entrance with additional large-capacity elevators, relocation of the press box, two new club lounges with exclusive club seating areas, updated luxury suites and five new super-suites.
In July 2000, the Indiana Convention Center & RCA Dome opened an additional 100,000 gross square-feet of column-free exhibit space, bringing total prime exhibit space available to 403,700 square feet. New features included the 10,000-square foot Wabash Ballroom, 5,800 square feet of dining space and a food court, two new glass encased entrances, 35,680 square feet of pre-function space, a landscaped plaza and a skywalk link to the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown. The expansion project was completed in its entirety in 2001.
The landscape of Indianapolis’ convention complex is changing and growing once again. In September 2005, city leaders broke ground on a new, multi-use stadium. The $500 million, retractable roof facility is now open just south of the Indiana Convention Center. Lucas Oil Stadium is the permanent home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, as well as a venue for NCAA basketball and major conventions and trade shows. A dramatic new expansion of the Indiana Convention Center is also underway. When completed in 2010, the facility will include 83 meeting rooms and ballroom spaces and 564,000 square feet of contiguous exhibit space in the convention center, and an additional 183,000 square feet of exhibit space in Lucas Oil Stadium, which will be connected.
