According to D.K. Shifflet & Associates and in partnership with Global Insight, Indianapolis hosted 21.9 million visitors in 2006, compared to 21.7 million visitors in 2005.
According to the report from D.K. Shifflet & Associates and Global Insight, 21.9 million visitors spent $3.56 billion in Indianapolis during 2006, resulting in 66,621 full-time equivalent employment positions in the hospitality industry. Leisure travel accounts for 63% of spending, while business travel accounts for 37% of visitor spending. Other figures released in the report include $1.9 billion in wages earned by members of the hospitality industry and $794 million in local, state and federal taxes generated by tourism during 2006. Without visitor spending, each Indianapolis household would pay an additional $613 in taxes to support the current level of services.
The mission of the Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association is to advance Indianapolis tourism and economic growth. The ICVA seeks to increase the number of visitors and their financial impact, expand positive perception of Indianapolis and positively influence the visitor experience.
